Chapter 13
* * *
Nick stretched before double-checking his seat belt. A grinding marked the lowering of the landing gear. Gryphon smiled and squeezed his hand.
"We're in Romania already?" Pavel yawned.
"Unless the pilot's testing the landing gear, we must be." Jess fidgeted in his seat.
"Jackass," Pavel mumbled.
Jess grinned and winked at Nick. Nick shook his head and leaned into Gryphon.
"When are those two going to stop picking on each other and actually sleep together?" he whispered.
Gryphon shrugged. "It might take Pavel a little longer. He has major issues with shifters, and lycans in particular."
Curiosity nibbled at him, but Nick didn't ask. It wasn't any of his business, though watching Pavel and Jess together was like viewing some bizarre mating ritual.
Within thirty minutes, they were on the ground. He grabbed his laptop, making his way to the exit door. Gryphon, Pavel and Jess surrounded Nick, escorting him from the private hangar into the airport's main terminal. One of the airport workers followed them with their luggage. Nick glanced around as they went.
As he scanned the crowd, a searing pain ripped through his head, dropping him to his knees. He gripped his head with a groan, fighting the urge to throw up at the intense agony.
"Nick, what's wrong?" Gryphon crouched beside him, touching his shoulder and peering into his face.
He waved in a vague gesture, not sure if he could shake his head without throwing up. The sensation of something crawling over his skin drew goose bumps, but a soft hiss reassured him that it was simply Serpens.
::Take a deep breath and hold it.::
::Why?:: Even as he asked the question, he did what the snake told him. He filled his lungs with air and stopped breathing, hoping Serpens could halt the pain.
::I'll explain later.::
His vision blurred and his lungs burned as he used up the oxygen in them. The slithering sensation moved up his chest and somehow entered his head. It settled around his brain and with a gentle undulation, the pain pushed out of his mind.
::Breathe.::
Head hanging, Nick gulped in air, clearing his sight and his brain. When the strength returned to his muscles, he held out his hand to Gryphon, who helped him up. Pavel and Jess stood, backs toward them, eyeing the crowd suspiciously. He rested against his lover for a second before straightening.
"What was that about?"
"We'll talk about it when we're out of the airport," Serpens spoke up.
"Good idea. I think we need to get out of here and on the road as soon as possible." Nick made sure his laptop was still at his side.
"Fine. Jess and Pavel, you two lead the way. Get us out of this crowd quickly and without attracting any more attention than we have."
Their friends followed Gryphon's orders immediately without questions. Nick found himself hustled out of the terminal to where a large black SUV sat idling at the curb. Their luggage ended up tossed in the back and the keys handed over.
"There's a dash-mounted GPS with your destination already put in. You shouldn't have any trouble finding the village you're looking for.
